Awareness as Nutrition & Power
Here in UK where I'm living, summer is the season for wild blackberries. I enjoy picking them in the summer every now and then on my dog walks. From what I understand, eople have been eating them as a precious source of vitamin for thousands of years in Europe and North America.
When I was living in the U.S., a friend of mine took me for a walk in a
residential area in Portland, Oregon. He is someone with vast knowledge
of plants (and nature in general), to the point he doesn't have to go to
restaurants when he travels abroad -- he keeps finding food everywhere,
even in urban areas.
In this walk also, he picked plums for us on a street corner and showed me other edible fruits and herbs that were growing here and there. This half-hour walk totally changed the way I see urban streets. What used to be just trees and weeds to me suddenly started to have names and faces. I can now spot more fruits and herbs on streets and in parks than before. Even though I still buy my veggies and fruits from stores, just to have the knowledge and the concept is quite empowering. Who knows, it may even be a life-saver someday.
The same goes for the news you receive and phenomena you encounter daily. The more you are aware and are equipped with different perspectives, the more you are empowered. I think in times of global transition like we are going through, it wouldn't hurt to have many sources of information as well as inner tools such as meditation and other ways to deal with challenging situations.
